1. Starting Your Quiz Planning
Building a quiz begins with the goals and planning phases of a quiz. Important decisions like which questions your quiz will have are often made before the first piece of the quiz has even been built.
While the right way to build a quiz is unique for every brand, the topics listed below can be effective as a general guideline on planning out a quiz in Octane AI.
Choosing the right number of questions.
A range of 5 - 10 questions is generally an effective amount to go with for minimal impact on drop-off rate. Of course, some quizzes can be shorter or longer.
Choosing the right balance of product-focused vs. lifestyle questions.
Try to make the first question in a quiz product-focused, or centered around what the customer is looking for. Going with a lifestyle question first may stop a customer from feeling like the quiz is relevant for them.
Think about questions that are for gathering information rather than recommending a product.
You can use questions that gather information to use across marketing channels, like through Octane AI's Klaviyo integration. Things like demographic information, customer behavior, how someone found your store and so on.
Deciding how many results a quiz will have.
There isn't a single right option for building your recommendations. But a general rule is the more results and recommendations you have, the more complex your quiz logic may become.
Beginning with broader categories for each recommendation can be a good way to approach your first quiz, since it's usually easier to expand a quiz than it is to simplify one.
If you're a skincare brand, you might base each of your recommendations on skin types, or skincare concerns for example.

With Octane AI's advanced rules, available for Pro and higher level plans, you can add logic to different content blocks inside of a results page to further personalize the version of a result that someone sees.
1.1. Best Practices while Creating a Quiz
When you're ready to start building a quiz inside of Octane AI, there are a few best practices that can make your quiz as easy and straightforward to build as possible.
1. Add your questions first, then your results pages.
Even if you have all of your results pages decided ahead of time, questions will need to be in your quiz to set the logic of your results.
Having your questions in place before creating results pages will make sure you don't have any missing pieces in your rules.
2. Start simpler, and build out from there.
An easy mistake to make is starting with a quiz that's too ambitious. Starting with the simplest version that fits your quiz goals gives you room to add complexity later, while shortening the time it takes to take a quiz live.
1-3 rules per results page is usually a good range to aim for with your quiz logic.
3. Add extra content to your questions and results pages.
Each question and results page sections have top content and bottom content sections. You can use these to add text, images, buttons, videos or even an add all to cart button to your quizzes.

If your quiz has questions that ask customers to think for the answer, adding visual or text as informational assets can help soften those higher effort questions.
4. Save often!
Octane AI's quiz builder doesn't include an autosave option, so saving often is an important habit to have. And if you encounter an error, the more recently you saved, the easier it is to figure out which change may have caused it.
5. Connect your integrations with Octane AI.
Each question, answer and result has a custom property that can be used to send data into other platforms through Octane AI's Klaviyo, Zapier & Alloy integrations.
Custom properties will be created even if you haven't added an integration yet, but doing so before your quiz is finished will make sure your integrations catch all of the data that they can.
Users on the Pioneer or higher plans can use Octane AI's Recharge integration to add subscription items into a quiz.
