1. Pop-up types

Octane AI pop-ups can be added to your website with three main variations:

  • Welcome pop-up: appears when a customer arrives on your website.

  • Add to cart pop-up: appears when a customer clicks the add to cart button.

  • Exit intent pop-up: appears when a customer tries to leave your website.

Every Octane AI user can create multiple pop-ups and can use each one with their Shopify store. If you already use a pop-up with another platform, that's okay! You can just use a select variation of our onsite pop-ups, or you use placement settings to add Octane AI's pop-ups only on certain pages to avoid overlap.

If a customer has already opted in through another Octane AI feature, such as a shop quiz or an add to cart checkbox, they won't receive any pop-ups so you don't have to worry about spamming customers that you already have contact information for.

Once a customer has seen a pop-up, it won't trigger again for them except in the following cases:

  • Visiting from a new browser

  • Visiting from a new device

  • Visiting in private/incognito mode

  • Visiting after clearing cookies

1.1. Welcome pop-up

Welcome pop-ups will display when a customer arrives on your website for the first time. If you're using pop-ups from multiple platforms, conflicts can occur so we recommend only using Octane AI's welcome pop-up on its own!

One great way to use your welcome pop-up is by shining a spotlight on an important part of your website, such as a certain collection or your shop quiz.

1.2. Add to cart pop-up

Add to cart pop-ups will appear when a customer adds an item to their cart. When this pop-up triggers, their item will be added to their shopping cart no matter what, even if they don't interact with your pop-up.

Once a customer opts in or closes the pop-up, they'll be able to continue shopping.

This can be an awesome way to upsell customers or offer an incentive in return for a discount. If a customer opts in with an add to cart pop-up, they'll be able to receive browse and cart abandonment messages as well!

You can learn more about add to cart pop-ups in this help article.

1.3. Exit intent pop-up

Exit intent pop-ups will show up when a customer tries to exit your website. On desktop devices, this happens when the customer's mouse cursor moves to their browser's address bar.

On mobile devices, the pop-up triggers when a customer interacts with their browser's address bar as well.

Exit intent pop-ups are great for preventing lost revenue by giving customers an incentive to keep shopping instead of leaving.

Here's an in-depth look at exit intent pop-ups for more information.

2. How to create and edit pop-ups

You can create or edit your existing pop-ups in your Octane AI dashboard by navigating to the pop-up page in your left-nav menu.

From the pop-up landing page, you can get a quick view of your pop-up views as well as access your pop-ups. You can even turn your pop-ups on or off just by clicking on the green switch next to each of your pop-up names.

To create a new pop-up, simply click the drop-down menu labeled "New".

When creating a pop-up, you'll have the option to create a pop-up with or without a built-in Shopify discount code. You won't be able to change this for a pop-up once it's been created, so you'll have to create a new one if you'd like to add or remove a discount.

2.1. Using the pop-up editor

When you create a new pop-up, you'll be taken straight into the pop-up editor. If you'd like to edit an existing pop-up instead, you can do that by scrolling to the bottom of a pop-up feature's main page and clicking "Edit".

Once you're in the pop-up editor, any changes you make can be previewed on the right.

Under your pop-up's settings, you'll be able to edit the following attributes:

  • Opt-in channels: any opt-ins you'd like to add.

  • Behavior: what will happen when a customer interacts with your pop-up.

If you add a Facebook Messenger opt-in, you'll be able to customize the message customers receive in Messenger once they subscribe.

If you remove all of your opt-ins, you'll be able to customize the call-to-action with a custom link or simply have the pop-up change to a submitted state without any extra events.

Under your pop-ups design settings, you'll be able to customize what your pop-up looks like with images, text and colors.

The ideal size for images you add to your pop-up will depend on the amount of content your pop-ups include. Formatting also differs between mobile and desktop pop-ups, so you may want to create separate pop-ups for different devices.

For more information on the best image ratios to use in Octane AI, check out this article.

When editing the text for your pop-ups, each element can be toggled with the "Visible" checkbox setting.

Try out each text option to see which one works best with your images and brand!

3. Adding opt-ins to pop-ups

With Octane AI, you can gather Facebook Messenger, email and SMS opt-ins. If you have a Klaviyo integration, any emails you gather will automatically sync into Klaviyo. As a bonus, if someone gives you their Messenger and email opt-in, their Klaviyo profile will display additional information.

What can I do with each opt-in?

Octane AI includes native Facebook Messenger and SMS tools that you can use to increase revenue, send broadcasts and create automated conversations that customers can interact with features like our onsite chat widget or Facebook Messaging ads.

Emails you gather will automatically sync into Klaviyo. If you have an Octane AI shop quiz, a customer's quiz results can even be sent into Klaviyo as custom properties even if they take the quiz first and submit their email in a pop-up afterwards.
