This article is a brief overview of advanced rules, currently available only for Pro, Pioneer and Custom plan Octane AI users. Advanced rules are optional for creating a working quiz, but can be a powerful tool to for personalizing the content in your quiz based on the actions that someone takes.
Table of Contents
1. Introduction to advanced rules
Octane AI users with access to advanced rules will see a rules section in the following parts of their quizzes:
What does the rule do?
Control who sees a results page based on someone's answers.
Control which question will come next based on someone's answers.
Display a content block only if someone matches the rules.
Display an answer only if someone matches the rules.
While rules are formatted in the same way in these parts of the quiz as your quiz results, advanced rules have different functions from the rules in your results pages.
Without advanced rules, people who take your quiz will be taken through each of your questions in chronological order.
Advanced rules in sections lets you overwrite the default logic, and instead specify specific questions someone can see next based on the answers they choose.
When you add advanced rules inside of an answer or content block, you're setting a condition that will only show the answer or content block if someone meets the requirements in your ruleset.
The content block below only contains text, and will display only if someone selects "Combination" as their skin type.
Rules inside of a section are made up of a couple of components.
All sections have two options for their default behavior. This defines what will happen to someone taking your quiz if they don't match any of the advanced rules you've added to a section, or if you don't have any advanced rules at all.
What does the rule do?
The next section in chronological order will be shown next.
The quiz will end after this section, and their results will be calculated based on rules in your results pages.
The default rule on its own won't decide the specific question or results page that someone will see.
Instead, once someone passes to the next question or to the results, then the specific page that will be shown is decided through advanced rules in sections or rules inside of a results page.
If someone says "Yes" to having a skincare routine already, they will be asked if their routine is in the morning or evening.
Advanced rules cannot be used to jump to a previous question in the quiz however - they can only be used to jump to a later question in the quiz.
3. Content blocks
Results pages are built through content blocks, which can contain products, images, text, buttons and more.
Without any advanced rules, every content block you add to a results page will be shown to anyone who lands on the page.
However, by using advanced rules, you can set conditions that will only show certain blocks if specific answers were chosen.
Inside of Octane AI's quiz editor, all of your content blocks will be visible even with advanced rules. To preview the advanced rules' personalization in action, you can add the quiz to an unlinked or hidden Shopify page.
Through advanced rules in content blocks, only the rulesets that my answers qualify for will be shown.
An answer with advanced rules will only show up as an option for people taking your quiz if they meet the requirements in your rule.
