1. How Does It Work?

Once your Facebook page has been connected to Octane AI, you'll be able to use any of Octane AI's Messenger features through your business' page. However, in order to send campaigns and automated flows, you'll need an audience to send to first.

In order for someone to receive messages from your page, they'll need to be a subscriber to your Facebook page which is similar to an email or SMS opt-in.

You can get a Facebook Messenger opt-in through several methods:

  • When someone messages your page directly.

  • With Octane AI website widgets.

  • With an Octane AI quiz or pop-up.

Normally, only the first option is available for your business but Octane AI provides additional tools you can use to grow your Facebook audience and keep them engaged.

Website widgets and pop-ups are an especially important part of your Facebook Messenger marketing funnel due to Facebook's 24-hour messaging rule.

1.1. The 24-Hour Rule

Interactions with your Facebook subscribers are all affected by a rule implemented by Facebook which only allows your page to message a user for 24 hours when they interact with your page.

These interactions can include:

  • Opting in to your Facebook page

  • Interacting with a website widget

  • Messaging your page

Once those 24 hours have passed, you won't be able to message someone outside of One-Time Notifications or Sponsored Messages.

Since One-Time Notifications require their own separate opt-in, and sponsored messages have costs associated with Facebook Ads, it's crucial to maximize the opportunity of this 24-hour period.

2. Getting to Know Your Facebook Messenger Features

The Facebook Messenger features in your Octane AI dashboard can be located under:

  • Facebook Messenger

  • Facebook Ads

Before you start, you'll need to get your Facebook accounts connected with Octane AI. Once your Facebook page has been connected, the Facebook Messenger features will function correctly.

Facebook Messenger features are split into these subcategories:

  • Flows

Automated campaigns that trigger based on customer actions, like when someone abandons their cart or places an order.

  • Main Menu

Your Facebook Messenger bot's dedicated options and navigation menu. A useful place to place your core links and conversations.

  • Website widgets

  • Campaigns

3. Setting Up Your Bot

Before you start communicating with customers through your bot, you may want to make sure your brand's voice is being represented through its automated interactions. This begins with the parts of your Facebook Messenger bot that someone first sees when they subscribe, the Welcome Message and your Main Menu.

Use the instructions below to set up each one!

3.1. Welcome Message

You can find your Welcome Message settings by going to:

This is the message that first displays when someone subscribes connects with your Facebook page's Messenger and opts in.

This is a great opportunity to insert a bit of personality from your brand and you can even promote specific pages, collections or products on your website in the message itself.

To create an in-message button like in the example above, follow these quick steps:

  1. Click on the message you want to attach the button to, and press the Enter key.

  2. On the next line, click the "Add Content" icon.

  3. Click the icon to the left of the blue "Reply" button on the right.

  4. Select the "Link to website" option and add the URL you'd like to link to.

These steps can be used in any Messenger content you create in Octane AI to attach a button to a particular message. Anyone who clicks on it during the conversation can trigger a pre-built conversation, be redirected to an external URL and much more.

If you disable your Welcome Message, your Main Menu will display by default instead.

3.2. Main Menu

Every Facebook Messenger bot has a Main Menu which only starts with two options:

  • Share: share a link to your bot on social media.

  • Subscribe/Unsubscribe: subscription options will display depending on whether the person is already opted in or out.

New items can be added to your Main Menu as well. Some effective ideas to use here are links to specific collections or to a product recommendation quiz - pages that you think your general audience would be interested in!

Main Menus can't be disabled and are always accessible through Messenger's persistent menu, so it's best to think of it as a sort of home screen for your page's Facebook Messenger bot.
