Using the People View in Phoenix

The People view creates a profile for every shopper who leaves an email or phone number in a quiz, with all their answers, results, and orders across quizzes. You can filter shoppers by any answer, export them, and sync them to Shopify.

What the People view is

The People view in Phoenix gives you one profile for every shopper who leaves an email or phone number in any of your quizzes. Each profile brings together everything that shopper has done with your quizzes: their answers, results, calculated values, sessions, and the orders they placed afterwards.

This means you don't need to connect your quizzes to each other. As long as a shopper identifies themselves, every quiz they take lands on the same profile, so you can see the full picture of each customer and segment your audience across all of your quizzes at once.

How profiles work

A profile is created the first time a shopper enters an email or phone number in one of your quizzes. From then on, identity is what connects everything: any quiz that shopper takes afterwards is added to that same profile.

Each profile stores:

  • Answers to every question they responded to

  • Results, including the result page they landed on and the products it showed

  • Calculated values, such as points, formulas, and lookup tables

  • Every session, including incomplete ones and older quiz versions

  • Orders placed in your Shopify store after taking a quiz

For example, if a shopper takes your skin quiz in March and your gift quiz in June using the same email, both quizzes appear on one profile. You can then find them with a filter like "said sensitive skin in the skin quiz AND picked travel in the gift quiz".

Where to find the People view

In Phoenix, click People in the left navigation under Grow. You can also get there from Analytics → People.

The list shows everyone who took a quiz and left an email or phone number, with the newest first. Above the list, you'll see the total number of people in the current view and how many of them came back to take a quiz again.

Click any row to open that person's full profile.

Note: If no one has opted in yet, you'll see a No people yet checklist instead of the list. To get your first profile, publish a quiz with an email or phone question, add it to your store, and wait for the first opt-in. New people appear a few minutes after they submit.

Searching and filtering people

Use the controls above the list to narrow down who you're looking at:

  • Search by email or phone to find a specific shopper.

  • Quiz selector (set to All quizzes by default) to show only people who took a specific quiz.

  • Date range to choose between the last 30d, 90d, All time, or a Custom range.

  • Filter by Answers to find people based on how they answered any question, in any quiz.

  • Include removed people to also show people who asked you to delete their data. They're hidden by default.

Filtering by answers across quizzes

Because every quiz a shopper takes lands on the same profile, you can combine answers from different quizzes in one filter. Click Filter by Answers to open the filter panel.

To build a filter:

  1. Under People who..., choose a quiz, then a question or formula from that quiz. Formulas appear in the list as "Formula:" followed by the formula's name.

  2. Pick a condition (for example, is any of) and select the answers that should count.

  3. Click + Add another answer to add another question to the same group. It can come from the same quiz or a different one.

  4. Click Apply.

The conditions you can pick depend on what you're filtering on:

Filtering on

Conditions

What you enter

Choice questions (multiple-choice or image answers)

is any of

Select one or more of the question's answers

Other question types such as text collection

contains, is exactly, matches, was answered, was not answered

The text to look for, or nothing for was answered/was not answered

Formulas

is between

A minimum and maximum value

Tip: Filtering on formulas is a great way to segment by the high-level traits your quiz calculates, like a points score or a price sensitivity value, instead of individual answers.

A shopper matches a group only if they gave all the answers in it. To match more people, click + Or add another group and choose or people who.... To narrow the match instead, choose and. You can add up to 4 groups, and Clear All resets the filter.

For example, one group with these two answers finds everyone who:

  • Answered Sensitive to "Skin type" in your skin quiz, and

  • Picked Travel in your gift quiz

The filter panel also has three toggles at the top:

  • Only count their latest take of each quiz: when off, an answer counts no matter when the shopper took the quiz. Turn it on to look only at each shopper's most recent take.

  • Only people who agreed to marketing: shows only people who ticked the marketing box beside their email or phone the last time it was shown to them. A skipped page, or a quiz without the box, counts as not agreeing.

  • Only people who came back: shows only people who took a quiz again after we first knew them, on any device.

Exporting a list

Click Export in the top-right corner, choose a format (CSV or JSON), and click Request. The file includes everyone in the current view (for example, everyone seen in the last 90 days), with one row per person and quiz they completed, along with what they answered.

We build the file in the background and email you when it's ready.

Note: The search box isn't applied to exports, so searching for a shopper won't limit the file to that person. To export a single shopper, open their profile and click Export this person.

Tip: Filters are a great way to build segments for a campaign. Filter for the audience you want, export it, or rely on your integrations to send the same data to your marketing tools automatically.

Reading a profile

Each profile is split into a few sections, from a quick summary at the top to the full session history at the bottom.

Summary

The top of the profile shows the shopper's email or phone, when they were first and last seen, and four key numbers:

  • Quiz sessions: how many times they've started a quiz, and how many of those they completed

  • Quizzes taken: how many different quizzes they've taken, out of your published quizzes

  • Orders: orders placed after taking a quiz

  • Spent: the total of those orders

Quiz results

Each quiz the shopper took gets its own card, showing their latest result for that quiz. The card includes:

  • The quiz version and date of the latest result, plus a Results link you can copy to see exactly what the shopper saw

  • Answers: every question and the answer they chose, including image answers and text inputs like their email

  • Calculated values: the values your quiz logic produced, such as formulas and points

  • Result page: which results page they landed on and how many products it showed

Note: Questions that use variables (for example, "How old is {{text_input}}?") currently display the variable name rather than the shopper's answer.

Every session

This section lists every quiz session the shopper has had, newest first. For each session, you'll see the date and time, the quiz and its version, whether it was completed and how many pages they reached, their device, traffic source, and country, plus a link to that session's results.

This is especially useful when a quiz has been edited, since you can see which version of the quiz a shopper took each time.

Orders after a quiz

This section lists the orders the shopper placed after taking a quiz, along with the Total spent. Orders count for up to 90 days after a quiz, at the amount paid at checkout.

Profile actions

At the top-right of every profile, you'll find three actions:

  • Export this person: downloads this shopper's profile and quiz data.

  • Sync to Shopify: sends the shopper's quiz data to their Shopify customer record as customer fields and tags.

  • Delete this person: erases the shopper's email, phone number, and any other contact details from their profile, their answers, and their orders on your store, just as if they had asked Shopify to delete their data. Their quiz sessions, other answers, and your totals are kept, so your analytics numbers stay accurate. This can't be undone. You can still see their quiz data by turning on Include removed people in the list, but their email and phone number will be gone.

Quiz data also flows to your connected integrations, such as Klaviyo and Attentive, as profile properties. This way you can use the same answers and calculated values to personalize emails, SMS, and flows.

Best practices for planning your customer data

The People view works best when your quizzes collect data in a consistent way. The right structure depends on your industry and goals, but these three tips apply to almost every store.

Treat each question as a customer attribute

Think of each question as a property you're learning about the customer, not just a question in one quiz. Name it like a property, such as "Skin type", "Budget", or "Hair goal".

When another quiz asks about the same thing, reuse the exact same question and answer options. This keeps your data lined up across quizzes, instead of ending up with "Skin type" in one quiz and "What's your skin like?" in another.

Pick a handful of attributes that matter most

Choose the five to ten attributes that matter most to your business, and make sure every quiz captures at least one or two of them. This way, profiles fill in a little more each time a shopper takes a quiz, instead of each quiz living in isolation.

Use quiz logic to create high-level traits

Instead of relying only on raw answers, use points, formulas, and lookup tables to calculate stable, high-level traits. For example:

  • Price sensitivity: high, medium, or low

  • Routine: minimal or full

Traits like these are easy for your marketing team to segment on, and they keep working even when you rewrite the questions in a quiz.

FAQ

Do I need to connect my quizzes for profiles to combine?

No. Profiles are connected by the shopper's email or phone number, so any quiz they take with the same contact info is added to the same profile automatically.

Why isn't a shopper showing up in People?

A shopper only appears once they've entered an email or phone number in a quiz. Also check that the quiz selector and date range aren't filtering them out. Try All quizzes and All time. Check if their profile hasn't been deleted as well.

Why does a profile show more than one version of the same quiz?

The Every session section records the quiz version each session used. If you edited and republished your quiz between sessions, you'll see different versions listed.

Which orders are counted on a profile?

Orders placed up to 90 days after the shopper takes a quiz, at the amount paid at checkout.

What happens when I remove a person?

Their email, phone number, and any other contact details are erased everywhere they appear, including in their answers (like an email question) and their orders. Their quiz sessions, other answers, and your totals are kept, so your numbers remain accurate. Deleting a person can't be undone, so make sure you've selected the right profile before confirming. Removed people are hidden by default. Turn on Include removed people to see them in the list.

In the list, a removed person shows as Removed at their request, with the date they were removed, instead of their email or phone. Their quizzes taken, last seen date, completions, and orders still appear.

You can still open a removed person's profile. It shows a Contact details deleted badge and a note with the date they asked you to delete their data, followed by their quiz answers, sessions, and orders as usual. Export this person is the only action available on a removed profile; Sync to Shopify and Delete this person no longer appear.

Who counts as agreeing to marketing?

Only shoppers who ticked the marketing checkbox beside their email or phone on their newest quiz session that showed it. Anything else, including a skipped page or a quiz without the box, counts as not agreeing.
