Set up product recommendation logic in your quiz

Choose how your quiz recommends products and create personalized results based on shoppers' answers.

Written by Ivana

Product recommendation logic determines which products shoppers see when they complete your quiz. You can use AI, product rankings, points, or manually selected products to create recommendations that match each shopper's needs.

Choose your product recommendation type

Before setting up your recommendations, decide how you want products to be selected.

Recommendation type

How it works

Best for

AI Smart Products

AI selects products based on shopper answers and your instructions

Personalized recommendations with minimal manual setup

Auto from Product Rankings

Products are ranked or filtered based on selected answers

Large catalogs, product matching, and collection-based recommendations

Auto from Points

Products are selected based on the highest-scoring points dimension

Personality quizzes, or shopper profiles

Manual

Manually select the exact products to recommend

Fixed recommendations, bundles, routines, based on an answer or specific answer combinations

Which should you choose?

  • Choose AI Smart Products if you want AI to evaluate your catalog and recommend suitable products.

  • Choose Auto from Product Rankings if you want to control recommendations using product scores, tags, or collections.

  • Choose Auto from Points if answers contribute to different categories or profiles, and the highest score determines the result.

  • Choose Manual if you know exactly which products should appear for particular shoppers.

You can combine different recommendation types by adding multiple Products elements to the same results page.

Add product recommendations to your results page

  1. Open your quiz in the editor.

  2. Navigate to the page you want to use for recommendations.

  3. Drag a Products element onto the page.

  4. Select the element and click its gear icon to open its settings.

  5. Under Source, choose your recommendation type.

  6. Set Max Products to control how many recommendations can appear.

You can also configure:

  • Hide Out-of-Stock Products: Exclude unavailable products from recommendations.

  • Products that can be recommended: Limit recommendations to selected products.

  • Products that cannot be recommended: Exclude specific products.

  • Visibility: Control when the Products element appears based on quiz answers or other conditions.

Set up AI Smart Products

AI Smart Products uses AI to select products based on shoppers' answers and your Shopify catalog.

  1. Select your Products element.

  2. Set Source to AI Smart Products.

  3. Enter instructions in the AI Prompt field explaining what products should be recommended.

  4. Set Max Products and any product inclusion or exclusion rules.

  5. Use Preview to test recommendations with different answers.

Tips for better AI recommendations:

  • Be specific about the shopper information AI should consider.

  • Reference questions and answers when relevant.

  • Use accurate Shopify product names when requesting specific products.

  • Include fallback instructions if necessary.

Set up Auto from Rankings

Auto from Rankings uses product rankings and filtering rules assigned to quiz answers to determine which products appear.

  1. Select your Products element and set Source to Auto from Rankings.

  2. Open Settings > Product Rankings.

  3. Select a question and choose how its answers should affect recommendations.

  4. Assign products, tags, or collections to the relevant answers.

  5. Repeat for additional questions and test your recommendations in Preview.

You can also configure rankings directly from an answer's Product Rankings settings.

Choose how answers affect recommendations

Ranking mode

How it works

Change rank a little (+1 / -1)

Slightly increases or decreases a product's ranking

Change rank a lot (+10 / -10)

Strongly increases or decreases a product's ranking

Match / Exclude

Filters products based on whether they match or should be excluded

When using ranking scores, products with the highest combined scores are recommended. When using Match / Exclude, only products that satisfy the filtering conditions are eligible.

Tip: Use product tags or collections to keep recommendations flexible as your Shopify catalog changes. Avoid overly restrictive filters that could leave shoppers without recommendations.

Set up Auto from Points

Auto from Points recommends products based on the highest-scoring points dimension.

  1. Open Settings > Points.

  2. Create dimensions representing the categories or outcomes you want to measure.

  3. Assign points to answers using the points grid or individual answer settings.

  4. Select your Products element and set Source to Auto from Points.

  5. Configure the products associated with your points-based outcomes.

  6. Test different answer combinations in Preview.

The highest-scoring dimension determines which group of products is recommended.

Tip: If multiple dimensions have the same score, the dimension appearing first in your list takes priority.

Set up Manual recommendations

Manual recommendations let you choose exactly which products appear on your results page.

  1. Select your Products element.

  2. Set Source to Manual.

  3. Add the products you want to recommend.

  4. Arrange them in your preferred order.

  5. Use Visibility > Edit logic to control when the Products element appears.

You can create multiple Products elements with different products and visibility conditions. You can also apply visibility conditions to individual products when you need more specific recommendations.

For detailed instructions, see Use branching logic and visibility rules in your quiz.

Preview and test your recommendations

Before publishing, use Preview to test your quiz with different answer combinations.

Check that:

  • The correct products are recommended.

  • Product rankings, points, and visibility conditions behave as expected.

  • Unavailable or excluded products don't appear.

  • Shoppers receive relevant results across different answer combinations.

Once your quiz is live, use Analytics to monitor recommendation performance and Experiments to test improvements.
