The Shopify Customers integration is configured separately for each quiz and is off by default. Shoppers are identified through their logged-in Shopify customer account or the email address they enter in the quiz.
Enable Shopify Customers
Go to your quiz → Integrations.
Select Shopify Customers.
Turn on Enable Shopify Customers.
Optionally, enter a Tag prefix.
Choose which tags to add and whether to send events to Shopify Flow.
Click Save changes.
Publish your quiz.
If your dashboard displays an Update permission banner, follow its prompts so Octane AI can write data to Shopify customers.
Note: Data syncs from the live, published quiz. Taking the quiz in Preview doesn’t save data to Shopify.
Choose your customer tags
Under Tags, choose which tag types to add to Shopify customers.
Tag type | What it identifies |
Took the quiz | Customers who completed the quiz |
Winning outcome | The highest-scoring outcome in a quiz using points |
Result page reached | The results page the customer reached |
Answers to selected questions | Answers to the questions you choose to tag |
Set a tag prefix
The prefix groups tags belonging to your quiz. If you leave it blank, Octane AI uses the quiz name. A colon is added to the end automatically if you don’t include one.
For example, a quiz using skincare-quiz: could add:
skincare-quiz:completedskincare-quiz:balancing-routineskincare-quiz:page:your-balancing-routineskincare-quiz:what-is-your-skin-type:oily
When a shopper retakes the quiz, tags starting with that prefix are replaced with their latest quiz tags. Tags outside the prefix remain unchanged.
Tip: Use a distinct prefix for each quiz to keep their tags separate.
Use tags in Shopify
Open Customers in Shopify and build a segment using your quiz tags. You can use these segments for targeted messaging, discounts, and other Shopify workflows.
View quiz data in customer metafields
Completed quizzes save customer metafields under the octaneai namespace. In Shopify, their display names follow the format Octane AI – [quiz name] – [field].
Depending on your quiz, these fields can include:
Field | What it contains |
Quiz answers | Answers collected in the quiz |
Result | The winning outcome for quizzes using points |
Points | The score recorded for the result |
Results page | The page the shopper reached |
Results link | A link back to the shopper’s results |
Discount code | The quiz discount code, when available |
Recommended products | Products recommended by the quiz |
Completed at | When the shopper finished |
To view them:
In Shopify, open Customers.
Select a customer who completed your quiz.
Click View all next to Metafields.
Pin the fields you use frequently so they appear on the customer page.
Customize answer labels
Answer metafield names come from your quiz’s Custom properties. You can review or rename them in your quiz editor → Integrations→ Custom properties. Multiple-choice answers are stored as lists, including questions that currently allow only one answer.
Sync past quiz takers
The integration saves new results after it’s enabled. You can also sync people who completed the quiz earlier.
Quiz → Integrations → Shopify Customers.
Find People who already took this quiz.
Click Sync them to Shopify.
This is optional and runs separately for each quiz.
Display quiz data in your storefront
The Storefront section in the Shopify Customers settings provides Liquid snippets with your quiz’s metafield keys already included. You can copy snippets to display a logged-in customer’s result and results link, show an answer, or display collection products tagged for their result.
Copy the snippet you want to use.
In Shopify, open Online Store → Themes → Customize.
Open the page or template where the content should appear.
Add a Custom Liquid section or block, if supported by your theme.
Paste the snippet and save.
For the collection products snippet, add the corresponding result tags to your products in Shopify.
Note: The result snippets use the winning outcome field and are intended for quizzes with points-based outcomes. Test the snippets with a logged-in customer before making them available to shoppers.
Send quiz events to Shopify Flow
Octane AI provides two Shopify Flow triggers:
Trigger | When it fires | Available information |
Quiz completed | A customer finishes a quiz | Customer, quiz, result, score, and results link |
Quiz abandoned | A started quiz is identified as abandoned | Customer, quiz, last page viewed, and start time |
These triggers only fire for shoppers identified as Shopify customers.
Create a workflow
Quiz → Integrations → Shopify Customers.
Enable Send quiz events to Shopify Flow and save your changes.
Publish your quiz.
In Shopify, open Flow and click Create workflow.
Click Select a trigger.
Search for Octane AI: Advanced Quiz Maker.
Choose Quiz completed or Quiz abandoned.
Add your conditions and actions.
Turn on the workflow.
For example, you could notify your team when a customer completes a quiz, add tags based on their result, or start a follow-up workflow. If your workflow sends marketing messages, make sure its conditions respect the customer’s marketing subscription status.
Test the integration
Open your published quiz on your storefront.
Take it while logged into a Shopify customer account, or enter an email address in the quiz.
Complete the quiz.
Open the matching customer in Shopify.
Check their tags and metafields.
If you enabled Shopify Flow, check the workflow’s activity.
Troubleshoot missing data
Quiz data isn’t appearing on the customer
Confirm that Enable Shopify Customers is on, your changes are published, and you tested the live quiz rather than Preview. The shopper must be logged into their Shopify customer account or enter an email address in the quiz.
Metafields aren’t visible
Click View all next to Metafields on the Shopify customer page. Unpinned fields may not appear in the main profile view.
Tags changed after a retake
This is expected. Octane AI replaces tags under the quiz’s prefix with the latest quiz tags and updates metafields with the latest answers.
A Shopify Flow workflow didn’t run
Confirm that Send quiz events to Shopify Flow is enabled, the workflow is active, and the shopper was identified as a Shopify customer. Review any workflow conditions that could prevent its actions.
