Compare quiz and non-quiz sessions in Google Analytics

Use Google Analytics 4 (GA4) Explorations to compare website sessions with and without a quiz completion. You can review purchases, revenue, and engagement, or build a funnel to see where shoppers leave your quiz.

Your quiz events must already be reaching GA4. To compare purchases and revenue, your store must also send ecommerce purchase events to the same property. For setup instructions, see Connect Google Analytics to Octane AI.

Find your quiz completion event

  1. Go to your quiz → Integrations.

  2. Select Google Analytics.

  3. Check the Quiz Completed event’s name.

If you haven’t entered a custom name, the default follows this pattern: oct_quiz_<quiz_name>_completed

Confirm the exact name in GA4 after completing a test quiz. If several quizzes share a custom event name, your comparison will include all quizzes sending that event.

Create an Exploration

  1. In Google Analytics, open Explore.

  2. Select Blank.

  3. Name it Quiz completion comparison.

  4. Choose a date range that includes your quiz tracking data.

Allow 24–48 hours for recently collected data to become available.

Create your session segments

Sessions with quiz completion

  1. Under Variables → Segments, click +.

  2. Choose Session segment.

  3. Name it Sessions with quiz completion.

  4. Include sessions containing your quiz completion event. Use Event name → exactly matches and enter the exact name.

  5. Save and apply the segment.

This includes all activity within those sessions, whether or not a purchase occurred.

Sessions without quiz completion

  1. Create another Session segment.

  2. Name it Sessions without quiz completion.

  3. Include sessions containing the session_start event.

  4. Add an exclusion for sessions containing the same quiz completion event.

  5. Save and apply the segment.

Exclude the entire session containing the completion event. Removing only the event would leave other activity from that session in the comparison.

Note: Sessions without completion may include shoppers who started but didn’t finish the quiz, or who completed it during an earlier visit.

Add your dimension and metrics

Under Dimensions, click + and import Session source / medium.

Under Metrics, import Sessions, Ecommerce purchases, and Purchase revenue. You can also add Engagement rate. Purchase and revenue data depend on your store’s ecommerce tracking. Connecting quiz tracking alone doesn’t set up purchase tracking.

Build the comparison table

In the Settings panel:

  1. Set Technique to Free form.

  2. Set Visualization to Table.

  3. Add both segments to Segment comparisons.

  4. Add Session source / medium to Rows.

  5. Add your metrics to Values.

The table compares the two groups by traffic source.

Understand your results

Compare session counts alongside purchases and revenue. A group with more traffic may generate more total revenue simply because it contains more sessions.

This report compares activity within the same session. It doesn’t require a purchase to happen after quiz completion, and it doesn’t prove that the quiz caused a purchase.

Build a quiz funnel

To explore where shoppers drop off:

  1. In Explore, create a Funnel exploration.

  2. Add a step using your Quiz Viewed event.

  3. Add a second step using your Quiz Started event.

  4. Add a third step using your Quiz Completed event.

  5. Use the exact event names configured for the same quiz.

Review the drop-off between steps to identify where shoppers stop progressing.

Troubleshoot missing data

If a segment or funnel is empty, check the event names, date range, and conditions.

If quiz activity appears but purchases or revenue are missing, confirm that purchase events reach the same GA4 property.

If your comparison groups overlap, check that the second segment excludes entire sessions containing the quiz completion event.
