Shop quizzes are a great representation of Octane AI as an all-in-one eCommerce suite for engaging your customers and gathering data, in addition to Messenger and SMS automation. With zero coding required, the quiz tool allows you to build a highly customizable quiz that integrates seamlessly with Octane AI and your Shopify store, capable of front-end services like suggesting products to customers while also enhancing the data and audience available to your bot.
A large part of your quiz will be made up of sections, which include question and opt-in pages. Once you understand how to use each part of sections, you'll be able to create an incredible variety of pages and pathways through your quiz.
This article will explain what sections are, as well as each setting within a section and how to use them.
Table of Contents
1. Sections
3. Answers
4. Rules
Sections
Sections are the pages and screens that make up your quiz. This can range from questions you ask the customer, an email opt-in field and even a free-form text field that allows customers to type in custom replies.
Using rules, you can set individual conditions for whether a customer will see sections or even specific answers based on their choices in the quiz.
Using the simple combination of a section/answer and a rule, you can create complex, intelligent flows with your quiz.
When creating your quiz, questions will be shown in the order that they're listed in the editor unless a section has a rule you've added that customizes where it links to.
Sections can be re-ordered when editing your quiz with a super easy drag-and-drop feature:

What goes in a section?
Sections can either be questions, or opt-in pages. The exact content and format will depend on what kind of section you create:
Explainer screen
A non-question screen that can include text and a button to start the quiz.
Question pages
Multiple choice
Picture choice
Free-form text
Opt-in pages
Messenger opt-in
Email opt-in
SMS opt-in
You can fill sections with text and media content, links to your store (or any other external link) and most importantly, answers customers use to progress through the quiz and determine the results that they'll see.
The parts that make up an actual section includes:
Settings: the title and subtitle of your section.
Additional content: text, images and buttons that can be added onto a page.
Answers (questions pages only): multiple or image choice answers.
Rules: logic that determines where a page will link to.
Background: background color/image settings that can be set for a specific page.
There are a lot of ways to use each type of section, so let's take a deeper dive into each type.
Explainer screen
Explainer screens are super versatile pages you can add anywhere in your quiz. Although you can't add answers to an explainer screen, you can still add content like text and images and even a link.
You could use explainer screens to introduce your quiz, lead into a specific question/results page or present news and updates.
Like any of the other sections, you can add rules that determine who will see the page, and the next page
Question pages
Question pages may end up making up the bulk of your quiz. The answer choices you add to questions won't just determine how someone experiences your quiz, they're integral to leading a customer to the right set of results.
Octane AI's analytics will also record data from customer choices and paths through your quiz, which can seamlessly be synced with Klaviyo.
There are three types of question pages that can be added:
Multiple choice
Picture choice
Free-form text
Free-form text question pages don't have typical answer entries like multiple and picture choice questions, so let's take a look at multiple and picture choice pages first:
Multiple choice pages have text-only answers, while picture choice pages can attach images to each answer. To add either page to your quiz, you'll have to first select multiple choice in the "Add section" screen:
Once you've added a multiple choice section to your quiz, you'll be able to switch between each type of page while editing the section itself:
With picture choice questions, you have access to a powerful customization toolset that lets you preview your changes on the fly. Making sure that each part of the page fits your brand and website's aesthetic is super easy:

Answer ratios that should be used for picture choice sections are listed below:
Square/Circle: 1:1
Portrait: 2:3
Landscape: 3:2

Free-form text pages on the other hand allow customers to enter custom text answers to a question. This means they don't have the same structured answers that multiple choice sections have and can't direct a customer through a quiz based on their specific answer.
However, you can still create rules based on whether a customer answered a free-form text question or not as well as add rules deciding which page a customer will see next.
You can skip ahead to check out how rules work with sections here.
Opt-in pages
Opt-in pages are available for Messenger, email and SMS. These can be placed anywhere in your quiz before results in order to gather more subscribers for your bot. If a customer gives you their email in the quiz, their results will automatically sync with Klaviyo as long as the integration is present in your account - even if they don't finish the quiz.
Learn how to use the Klaviyo integration with Octane AI and the quiz.
Much like explainer pages, you can add additional content as well as rules that affect the flow of your quiz based on whether the opt-in was answered or not.
If you decide to make your opt-in pages optional, don't worry, quiz results will still be saved. If a customer completes your quiz without giving you their email and submits their email to you later, their past results will still be able to sync into Klaviyo.
Let's take a closer look at the additional content that you can add to any of your pages.
Additional content
Additional content can be added onto every page on your quiz in the form of text, an image or a button.
Each of these additional content types can be added to any page in your quiz, even results pages! Located under the "Additional Content" tab in the quiz editor's left-bar, additional content can even be re-arranged just like sections making it extremely easy to design any of your pages.
Text
There are 5 types of text you can add as additional content. Any text you add in your sections as additional content will match the font and color formatting you've selected in your quiz settings.
Here are examples of each text type:
Image
You can set a maximum with in px for any image you add as additional content. This lets you resize your image as necessary.
Button
Buttons can be added to your pages that link to an external website. You can use this to a link to your store, or content like a blog or newsletter.
Here are examples of each button style:
You can use one, or more than one of these content types on every section page, previewing any changes in real time.
If you want to make sure that the font style on the buttons is consistent and fits the entire quiz, you can go to Quiz Settings โ Typography and select the custom font family box for each button style:
Moreover, in the Color & styles section of the Quiz settings, you can choose the colors of individual elements of your buttons, such as background, text and border:
Answers
Answers are a core part of multiple and picture choice questions. Each answer will be an option customers can select, which not only drives the quiz forward but is also collected as data by Octane AI.
Answers by Messenger subscribers will automatically sync into Klaviyo as well, letting you see the exact path a customer took through your quiz. If a customer isn't a Messenger subscriber, and takes the quiz first, that's okay - the data will be able to sync once they opt-in later.
Answers are made up of three parts:
Settings
Rules
Actions
1. Settings
This is where you add your answer label, which is what appears on the answer button. Answers in a multiple choice page can only contain text, but image choice pages can have text and an image in each answer.
2. Rules
You can add a rule to an answer which sets the answer to be an option only if a specific previous answer was selected by the customer.
If you don't set any rules for an answer, then the answer will display for all customers that see the question. For more about how to use rules, skip ahead.
3. Actions
Under actions, you can edit the name of the Klaviyo custom property or Facebook pixel event that will be attached to the section you're editing.
The Klaviyo property is used to represent the question, while values are used to represent specific answers or results.
As long as a customer submits their email and Klaviyo is integrated into your Octane AI account, results will sync automatically. To learn more about how Klaviyo works with the quiz tool, check out this article.
How to format picture choice answers
Picture choice answers can be formatted using the options under the "Answers Display" tab on the left-bar while editing a picture choice section.
These changes can be viewed in real time, and even let you set different alignment settings for desktop and mobile devices. In addition to setting the amount of answers per row, you can set the relative size of your images or let the quiz automatically format that for you.
If we click on an answer itself, you'll see more formatting options. Using the left-bar while editing a picture answer, you can edit how your image is cropped and framed.
TIP: if you want to rearrange your picture answers, you can drag-and-drop them just like sections and additional content.
Rules
All sections can have rules, including opt-ins, questions and explainer pages. One of these is the rule for quiz progression if no other rules are set:
If you choose "Results", you won't be able to choose a specific results page. This means the quiz will finish the quiz and show the customer the results page that their answers meet the requirements for. If no custom results page fits the customer's answers, they'll view the default results page instead.
If you add a new rule for a section, you can specify the next page customers will go to based on the answer(s) they select on this and previous pages.
Let's look at an example of a rule we can add for opt-ins.
In this rule, I've set it up so that if a customer skips both the Messenger and email opt-ins I've set up, it will skip the SMS opt-in page as well and go straight to the first question in the quiz.
The all conditions block was used instead of the any block, as we want customers to skip both opt-in pages to go straight into questions. If they only skip one, they may still be interested in submitting their SMS information.
This isn't necessarily best practice - the best rules for your quiz will be completely dependent on your goals for your quiz and your store!
If you add a rule for explainer screens, you can create a rule based on whether the continue button was pressed or not.
