What the Variant Matrix is
This feature adds AI-powered variant matching to your quizzes by automatically mapping customer answers to the correct product variant using a customizable dimension matrix, for example Skin Tone + Undertone variants.
You can define dimensions, assign products, and build a variant matrix that the quizzes use in real time. Whenever a product recommendation appears, the system analyzes the customer's answers and selects the most accurate variant automatically.
This will work on top of your existing product recommendation. If your quiz recommends a foundation, for example, your Variant Matrix will make it pre-select the exact shade variant according to how you set it up.
Initial set up
First, you need to have a quiz that recommends a parent product. For this article, we have created a simple quiz that asks the customer's skin tone and undertone, and it always recommends the same parent product, a foundation:
The Variant Matrix will make sure that the correct variant is pre-selected for the customer when they get to the quiz's results. In this example, we are using a Curated products block, but the Variant Matrix works for all types of results: Curated, Dynamic and Smart Products. It will pre-select the correct variant for the customer. Check out this article for more information on the different results types.
Once your quiz is ready and the parent product recommendations are set up, go to your Octane AI dashboard, and select Variant Matrix under Quizzes on the left:
Creating the dimensions
Once the Variant Matrix is open, you will see a series of steps: Dimensions, Products, Matrix Builder, Quizzes, Preview & Test. Let us start with the Dimensions. Click on Add Dimension:
In this article's example, we will set up the Variant Matrix for a foundation product, but it can be used for any sort of product variant.
We will create two dimensions: Skin Tone and Undertone, each with their own values. You can add the values to the dimension by clicking Add value. Once you have finished setting up this dimension, click on Add Dimension:
Here are our two dimensions with their values:
Adding the products
On the Products tab, you can click Add product:
You will open the product picker like in your quizzes. Let us find our foundation. Click the product once you have found it to add it:
You will see all the added products here. When clicking Configure, you will automatically be taken to the Matrix Builder tab to edit this product's Variant Matrix. If you want to remove products, you can do so by clicking the trash can icon next to Configure.
Setting up the product's Variant Matrix
You can go to the Matrix Builder tab and select the product via the Product dropdown selector, or be taken directly to the product's Variant Matrix builder from the Products tab. Click the Dimensions dropdown selector to add the necessary dimensions, we will add both here:
Once they are selected, you will see a set of rows and columns with all possible variant combinations. You can set up the exact variant for each combination on the Variant dropdown selector. Here is how we set it up for this example. You can change the sorting criteria on Sort by, and clear out any row by clicking the X button next to it:
You can see that each combination has a matching variant. This ensures total accuracy for the recommended variant in the quiz.
Once you are done, you can move on to the Quizzes tab.
Selecting the quizzes
On the Quizzes tab, click Add quiz to select all quizzes that will use the Variant Matrix:
Make sure that your quiz asks questions that are related to your dimensions. Our quiz for this example only asks two questions, one about the skin tone and one about the undertone.
Previewing the results
Now that you have set up your dimensions, built your matrix and selected your quizzes, you can preview the exact variant that will be output according to your matrix. Select the values of the dimensions and click Run Preview to see the variant that will be recommended:
Now, we will test the actual quiz.
Testing the quiz output
