Octane AI has introduced a new credit-based pricing model designed to give you more accuracy, transparency, and flexibility in how your quiz and AI features are billed. This article explains what credits are, how they’re consumed, how to track them in your dashboard, and how this new model improves on our previous engagement-based system.
What are credits?
Credits are the new way Octane AI measures how much you use your quizzes and AI-powered products.
Every quiz start uses 1 credit, and every AI action uses a fraction of a credit based on how complex the task is.
Whenever you use our agentic AI products — like Smart Products, Smart Copy, Smart Properties, Image Analyzer, or the AI Quiz Builder — credits are automatically deducted.
Think of credits as the AI power your account consumes:
Short or simple outputs → fewer credits
Longer or more complex outputs → more credits
Credits are calculated in real time and deducted the moment an AI-powered product runs. Previewing your quiz inside the dashboard also uses a small number of credits.
Your credits reset automatically on the first day of your billing cycle, giving you a fresh balance every month. And if you ever reach your limit and have Overages Protection enabled, your AI tools will continue working seamlessly — you’ll simply be billed for the additional credits you use.
You can track your current balance, monthly usage, and remaining credits anytime inside your Octane AI dashboard.
💡 How Credits Are Used
You’ll use credits in two ways:
1. Quiz starts
Quiz start counts when a quiz taker moves past the first screen of a live quiz or interacts with a pop-up
2. Using an AI-powered product
Credits are deducted for AI token usage for each of our AI-based features
Features with additional credit usage
Smart Products
Smart Products use AI to choose which products to display on your quiz results pages, based on the user’s answers or your prompt.
Every time AI analyzes quiz results and recommends products, a small number of credits are used.
Smart Copy
Smart Copy creates text for your brand — headlines, quiz results, descriptions, or messages — based on your prompt.
The longer or more detailed the requested text is, the more credits it consumes.
Smart Properties
Smart Properties work similarly to Smart Copy but with more flexibility. You can use them directly in your HTML on results pages for dynamic personalization or behind the scenes to pass AI-generated data into your integrations (for example, sending personalized traits to Klaviyo or Recart). Each AI generation (visible or invisible to the customer) consumes credits depending on the text length and complexity.
Image Analyzer
When you upload an image, Octane AI analyzes it and generates insights or descriptions about it. The more detailed the image analysis request, the more credits are used.
AI Quiz Builder / Question Generator
The AI Quiz Builder uses credits to create your quiz structure, questions, and results automatically from your product data or short prompts. Because this process generates multiple AI responses at once, it typically uses more credits than a single Smart Copy request.
Why Octane AI switched from engagements to credits?
Our previous pricing model counted every quiz engagement the same, regardless of whether it triggered a simple interaction or a complex AI-generated experience. As we introduced agentic AI products powered by CORE-1 — such as Smart Products, Smart Copy, Smart Properties, Image Analyzer, and the AI Quiz Builder — usage patterns began to vary significantly from brand to brand.
Some merchants were generating full quiz structures, others were creating long-form Smart Copy, and others were using lighter product recommendations. The engagement model couldn’t reflect these differences in AI workload.
The new credit system aligns your cost with your actual AI usage. You’re billed based on the AI processing your account consumes — nothing more, nothing less.
Credits give you clearer visibility into how your quizzes and AI-powered products are being used, more control over monthly limits, and a more accurate and flexible billing model as AI becomes a larger part of your workflow.

Your quizzes and AI continue running
You can set a monthly overage limit (maximum number of extra credits allowed each billing cycle)
Receive usage alerts as you approach your limit.
Check the estimated cost for your extra credits.
With Overages Protection OFF

You can set up alert thresholds to help you track and manage usage before reaching your overage limit.
When these thresholds are reached, account admins will receive an email notification with the estimated cost at that point.
You can adjust these settings under Settings → Credits in your dashboard.
