Implementing Octane AI features on your store

Once you install Octane AI on your Shopify store, you'll be able to set up features like onsite pop-ups or a quiz that collects information about your users. You can even combine these features to create a Conversational Pop-up or even display product recommendation quizzes inside of a pop-up.

While there are a lot of ways to add these features to your store, here are some general guidelines you can keep in mind when getting started.

Conversational Pop-ups

You can use Conversational Pop-ups with a Welcome or Exit Intent Pop-up, but the right one to use might depend on where in the customer journey you want your pop-up to appear.

Welcome Pop-ups greet users when they first land on your website - you can set the pop-up to show up or exclude certain pages as well. Since Conversational Pop-ups are able to ask about a customer's preferences as well as make a recommendation, this can be a great way to fast track a customer to the products in your store they're most likely to purchase.

Exit Intent Pop-ups appear when someone is about to leave your store. This makes them a great option for catching people who are about to exit your website without purchasing, especially if you offer a discount or similar incentive in your pop-up.

Product Recommendation Quiz

The basic concept behind a product recommendation quiz is fairly simple - ask a customer a series of questions, and then recommend product choices based on those answers. But there are a lot of ways you can build and implement a quiz like this.

Here are some tips to keep in mind when creating your first quiz.

Try to avoid starting with too much complexity. It's usually easier to add onto a quiz than it is to take away from one, especially once you've started building your quiz's logic. Starting from a minimalistic version of the ideal quiz you'd like to create can help keep your quiz just to the questions that are necessary, and shorter quizzes usually have a higher completion rate by customers as well.

Test your quiz as you build it. If you embed your quiz into a hidden Shopify page, you can quickly test your quiz since any changes you make will be reflected in the embedded version automatically. Testing your quiz, especially as you build your rules, will make it easier to catch inconsistencies in your quiz and apply fixes.

Save often! Octane AI's quiz editor doesn't have an autosave feature, so we recommend saving often to make sure your work stays safe and secure.

Octane AI also syncs email addresses collected in Shopify's checkout if the customer places their order while giving your store permission to contact them in the future with marketing content.

You can collect email, SMS or Facebook Messenger opt-ins through these features. If you are planning on collecting multiple types of opt-ins, you may want to try using different opt-in methods for each one. For example, you could split an email and SMS opt-in between two pop-ups, or have one in an onsite quiz and the other in a Conversational Pop-up.

This can help your opt-ins be more compliant while making customers feel less overwhelmed with marketing options.

Using Octane AI's integrations

When you collect information about someone through a quiz or Conversational Pop-up, their specific answers and results are saved as custom properties. Custom properties are attributes about someone like their quiz answers, Octane AI lists, opt-in source and more that you can use to personalize your content across Octane AI's integrations.


When an email or SMS opt-in is sent to Klaviyo, Octane AI will include any relevant custom properties in their Klaviyo profile as well.

These custom properties can be used to segment customers and personalize flows or even email content in Klaviyo. For example, you could have an email show different content based on the specific recommendations someone received in a quiz but it does involve manually coding portions of your emails in HTML.


Zapier & Alloy

Custom properties can be sent into other platforms through Octane AI's integrations with Zapier and Alloy. Some apps may display custom properties as tags within a customer profile, while other platforms like Omnisend may support custom properties as well.
